‘Rama was born on Saturday the 7th of June 2008 at 2.53pm, a little early – 3 weeks and 3 days. He (his arrival) followed a successful acupuncture session on Friday afternoon to turn him from posterior to anterior.
We had planned to work through THE PINK KIT (now called the Birthing Better Childbirth Preparation Online Course) positions the following weekend and getting all the things we would need ready for the birth: oils, candles, music etc. oops – didn’t quite make it and this was a first Bubba for Mum! At 4.30am when I got up to one of the 8 nightly toilet visits my waters broke, very gradually. I didn’t feel contractions – the Braxton Hicks I had were more intense – so I just thought it to be part of my waters breaking. I went back to bed and slept until 9am. I rang Susan to let her know and thought I could go on for days or at least hours before anything substantial would start happening.Dad was at a 3 day Vipassana course for the weekend and had said to call him when I wanted him to come home. I was home having a baby shower with a few friends that were coming up from Brisbane to Coran. (About a one and a half hour drive away. As I thought nothing was really happening, I was going ahead with my baby shower.)
We had recently moved from Brisbane and Susan had also moved from Bli Bli to her beautiful home at Mapleton at the same time so you have to love synchronicity. This was one of the many that confirmed we had chosen the most wonderful person for our birth journey.
I rang Susan at 11am and contractions weren’t regular or strong and Susan asked me to call back at 12.00pm (before she came) to see how we were progressing. Things changed a little by then. I was googling Vipassana between really strong contractions, as I couldn’t find the number Richard had left me. I rang and got an answering service and had a crack at leaving a message between contractions.
I rang Susan and she decided she would get here as soon as she could as the contractions were taking my concentration and powering along. I called the girls to see how far away they were and they took a while to work out the big pauses between conversations were contractions! The invitation for the baby shower had read – come and celebrate the dawn of my baby coming into this world…It sure was.
I had planned to work with toning a lot and a lot of calming from my partner – I had to instruct the girls how to slow me down when I was having contractions. It was odd being in charge of my labour that way – but in between contractions it was amazing how lucid I could be. The hour or so (of) labouring on my “alone” was a challenge as the ego mind kicked in – but whenever I asked for help from Spirit I got it with a relief in the next contraction.
When Susan got here I felt more at peace and continued to labour hanging off the shower or toilet door – so much for the other birth positions I had looked at! I had strong primal noises going on from the time I had been alone and found it hard to break this cycle. Susan suggested I place my legs further apart and really ground down with the next contraction – it was an amazing feeling – almost like an orgasm – major release of all the built up energy to that stage.”
“By this stage it was really time for someone to go and get Richard – it took 15minutes between contractions to give full instructions for the 15 minute drive. Bubba was coming quickly so we lay down and Susan focussed with me and we toned together and this calmed down my primal noises—it also relieved the pain. I had hoped to be in this place for the whole birth…but…
Dad turned up (with 7 minutes to spare, we were later told) and got to see 2 contractions in the air. I felt the head coming and Susan suggested we get into the pool otherwise it won’t be a water birth, which we had wanted. The birth pool was just barely full enough and just about the right temperature we needed. Two more contractions and Bubba was here. It was so amazing feeling his head coming into this world. I had made it and hadn’t even realised that that birth had been so close.
I had a low lying placenta and there was a lot of bleeding…so we got out of the pool and birthed the placenta as quickly as possible. It was taking a while and Susan tried some higher tones which brought it down straight away!
We had the wonderful Lotus water birth that we had planned but not exactly how I had envisaged it (of course) but it was what I had asked for. I asked for Bubba not to be too heavy – he was 7lb 15oz (3600g). I asked him for a quick birth as it was less stressful on him and me – and as a friend reminded me – I (had) asked to work with Spirit alone and I (had) even forgotten that. So my contribution for birthing advice is to manifest the birth YOU want – but remember you must always be specific and open to how the Universe will deliver this to you!!
I cannot thank Susan enough for the recovery and adjusting that went on over the next few weeks – words or even gifts cannot convey what a wonderful woman she was. Every time she left I would feel my heart lifted – like it was singing – a nice change from the crazy hormones that were going all sorts of places. Susan, thank you for your continual love, peace and presence. We have a wonderfully gently birthed son – there was no better way for him to come into the world.
